En agosto de 1914, el famoso explorador Ernest Shackleton junto a su tripulación de veintisiete hombres se embarcaron rumbo al Atlántico Sur con la intención de conseguir un hito en la historia de la exploración: realizar el primer viaje a pie a la Antártida. Después de abrirse camino por un mar de hielo helado, y cuando sólo les separaban de su destino ciento sesenta kilómetros, el barco en el que viajaban, el Endurance, se quedó atrapado en el hielo y la tripulación quedó abandonada a su suerte. La terrible experiencia, convertida en una lucha desesperada del hombre contra la naturaleza, duró más de veinte meses antes de ser rescatados, y fue un auténtico milagro que salieran con vida.
